Humanitarian & NGO

Humanitarian shipments rarely move through the infrastructure a standard commercial shipment relies on. Medical supplies, field equipment, and emergency generators often need to reach locations with limited or damaged infrastructure, under time pressure that leaves no room for a shipment to sit in a queue while paperwork is sorted out. The destinations themselves are frequently restricted or subject to specific import controls that a standard freight process is not built to handle.

Documentation for NGO and relief shipments carries its own requirements, from end-use certificates to import permits issued by authorities that may not respond on a predictable timeline. Getting this wrong does not just delay a shipment, it can mean goods are held indefinitely at a border while the people who need them wait. We prepare this documentation with the same care we would apply to any regulated cargo, because in a crisis response, there is no second attempt at getting it right.

On the ground, relief shipments depend on coordination with local partners who understand the specific conditions of the destination, whether that is a damaged port, a single functioning access road, or a security situation that changes daily. AOG — Aircraft on Ground

When an aircraft is grounded, the operational picture moves fast in every direction at once. Maintenance teams need the part identified and sourced. The airline needs a realistic timeline to plan around. And somewhere, a freight forwarder needs to find the fastest way to physically move that part from wherever it is to wherever the aircraft is sitting. All of this happens in parallel, not in sequence, because there is no time for it to happen any other way.

Flight speed gets the attention, but documentation speed matters just as much. An export declaration, an end-use statement, or a classification check that takes a day to prepare under normal circumstances still has to happen correctly, just compressed into an hour or two. A part that clears customs quickly because the paperwork was right the first time beats a part that flew fast but sat at a border because a document was missing.

AOG situations do not respect time zones, and neither do we when one is active. Coordinating a part moving from one side of the world to an aircraft grounded on the other means working across a schedule that spans a full day, keeping origin handlers, the airline, and the destination team aligned even as the people involved are asleep in different time zones. When a commercial flight cannot get the part there fast enough, an on-board courier adds a layer of speed and certainty a standard freight booking cannot match, because a person is physically responsible for that part from collection to delivery.

Project Cargo & Out-of-Gauge

Project cargo is defined by what does not fit the standard process. A turbine component, a piece of processing equipment, or a structural steel section can weigh many tonnes and exceed the dimensions of a standard container or trailer entirely. Once cargo reaches that scale, the question stops being which service to book and becomes which combination of specialised equipment, permits, and routing can actually move it.

Before anything is booked, oversized cargo usually needs a route survey: checking bridge heights, road widths, weight limits, and turning radii along the entire planned route, because a single obstruction discovered after departure can strand a shipment for days. Permits for abnormal loads have to be arranged in advance with the relevant authorities, and they are specific to the route, the vehicle, and the dimensions of that particular load.

Most project cargo moves as a genuinely multimodal operation: a sea leg for the long haul, a heavy-lift road transport for the final distance, sometimes a barge or rail section in between. Coordinating that as one operation, rather than a series of separate bookings handed between different providers, is what keeps a multi-week, multi-country movement on schedule instead of losing days at each handover.

Dual-Use Goods

Dual-use goods are products, software, or technology that have a legitimate civilian application but could also be used for military purposes. This covers a wider range of everyday goods than most people expect: certain electronics, sensors, materials, and even some software fall under dual-use classification depending on their specification, not just their obvious intended use.

This makes dual-use one of the more complex regulatory areas in freight, because the classification depends on precise technical detail rather than a simple product category. Two items that look identical on a packing list can sit on opposite sides of a licensing requirement depending on a specification most people would not think to check. Getting the classification wrong is not a minor paperwork error. It can mean an export proceeds without a required licence, which carries serious legal consequences for the exporter, not just a delayed shipment.

Where a licence is required, the application process involves demonstrating the end use and end user of the goods, sometimes with supporting documentation from the buyer, and can take weeks to process depending on the destination and the authority involved. Classification itself requires checking the goods against control lists that are detailed and regularly updated, which is exactly the kind of work that rewards experience over guesswork.

Dangerous Goods

Dangerous goods are governed by different rulebooks depending on how they travel. IATA's Dangerous Goods Regulations apply by air, ADR applies by road across Europe, and the IMO's Dangerous Goods Code applies by sea. Each sets its own classification, packing, labelling, and documentation requirements, and a shipment that moves by more than one mode has to satisfy all of the relevant ones along the way.

At the centre of all three is the shipper's declaration: a formal statement confirming the goods have been correctly classified, packed, marked, and are in a condition to travel safely. It has to match the physical shipment exactly, from the UN number to the packing group, because the people handling the cargo rely on that document to know what they are actually dealing with.

When DG documentation is wrong, the consequences are immediate and rarely negotiable. Cargo gets refused at the gate rather than queried and released later. A shipment already in transit can be delayed indefinitely while the error is corrected, and regulatory fines can follow even after the goods eventually move. We handle the full compliance process, classification through to the final declaration, so a dangerous goods shipment moves on the first attempt rather than the second.

Temperature Controlled

The cold chain means a temperature-sensitive shipment stays within its required range from the moment it is packed until the moment it is delivered, with no gap in between. In practice, that means every handover, every wait between flights or trucks, and every hour spent at a terminal has to be planned with the same care as the transport itself, because the chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Active solutions use powered refrigeration, either a temperature-controlled container or a reefer truck, and are suited to longer journeys or larger volumes where precise, adjustable control matters most. Passive solutions rely on insulated packaging and refrigerant or phase-change materials to hold a temperature range for a defined period without power, which works well for smaller shipments or legs where active equipment is not practical. We recommend whichever genuinely fits the route and the product, not whichever is easiest to book.

For pharmaceutical products, Good Distribution Practice sets specific requirements for how the product is stored, monitored, and documented throughout the journey. If the temperature range is broken, even briefly, the product can be compromised and may need to be written off entirely, a cost that dwarfs whatever was saved by cutting a corner on the packaging or the routing. We prevent that by planning the full route in advance, monitoring the shipment while it moves, and choosing partners at every leg who are equipped to keep the chain intact rather than hoping they are.

Live Animals & Valuable Cargo

Exotic animals cannot move internationally without CITES documentation, the permit system that regulates trade in species protected under international convention. The permit has to be arranged before the shipment, matched precisely to the species and the specific animals travelling, and cleared at both the export and import side. Getting this wrong does not just delay a shipment, it can mean the animals cannot travel at all.

Beyond the paperwork, live animal transport carries welfare requirements that shape every part of the journey: container specifications suited to the species, feeding and watering schedules that hold up across transit times, and in many cases a dedicated escort travelling with the animals. We plan around the animals' welfare first and the logistics second, because the two are not actually separate considerations.

Valuable cargo, whether that is fine art, jewellery, or a one-of-a-kind prototype, runs on a different kind of care: chain of custody. That means a documented, unbroken record of exactly who has had control of the item from the moment it is collected to the moment it is delivered, with no unexplained gap in between. Discretion matters as much as security here. We do not publicise details of high-value shipments, and we coordinate handling and transport in a way that keeps the item's value and sensitivity in mind at every stage, not just during the obvious risk points.

Industrial Line-Stop

A line-stop happens when a production facility cannot continue running because a specific part or component is missing, and every hour it stays stopped costs far more than the part itself is worth. For a manufacturer in that position, the shipment is not really about freight anymore, it is about how quickly the line can start moving again.

In a line-stop situation, cost stops being the deciding factor and speed and reliability take over. Paying a premium for the fastest available routing is rarely a difficult decision when the alternative is a stopped production line racking up losses by the hour. What matters is that the solution offered is actually the fastest one available, not just the first one suggested.
